How to choose a home robot you will actually use

A task-first guide to modular robots, connected devices and realistic automation.

The quick answer

Choose a home robot for a specific repeated task. Verify the included modules, device compatibility and privacy controls before buying. A modular platform can be interesting, but useful automation begins with a clear job rather than a long list of possibilities.

Name the task first

“Make my home smarter” is hard to evaluate. “Clean this floor every weekday” or “move a compatible monitoring camera around this room” is a clearer requirement. Check that the chosen product can do that task in your actual layout. Stairs, narrow spaces, pets and floor surfaces can limit what a mobile platform can do.

Check what is included

Product photos may show several optional modules. Compare the exact kit contents, compatible accessories and any separately purchased devices. If a feature needs a camera, hub or voice assistant, include that in your decision. Keep regional model differences in mind when reading a global feature page.

Review privacy and control

For camera-enabled robots, review live viewing, account access, recording storage and available privacy settings. Decide who in the household should have access. Understand which controls work locally and which require an internet connection. Compatibility with a voice assistant does not mean every function is available through that assistant.

Prefer a routine you can maintain

Think through charging, cleaning, storage and replacement parts. A clever function that needs frequent intervention may be less useful than a simple routine that works consistently. We recommend starting with a defined role and expanding only when a compatible module adds a task you genuinely want.

Your questions, answered.

Are modular home robots general-purpose assistants?

No. Their capabilities depend on the platform, supported modules and software.

Should I buy every accessory at once?

Start with the exact task you need, and confirm which accessories it requires.
