Why we like the PiCrawler as a first walking robot
Four legs, twelve metal-gear servos and a camera on your desk is a fun way to learn robotics. The PiCrawler walks, turns, sits, dances, waves and does push-ups, and you control it either from the mobile app with FPV video or from your own Python or Scratch code. At $139.99 it is the lower-priced of SunFounder’s two Raspberry Pi walkers, and Scratch support makes the first steps gentler than Python alone.
Setup and what you need
The kit does not include a Raspberry Pi. SunFounder lists the Raspberry Pi 5, 4B, 3B+, 3B and Zero 2W, and its photos show a board mounted on the robot. You will also need storage for the Pi and some patience for assembly and configuration, following SunFounder’s tutorials.
Vision, voice and AI
A camera and ultrasonic sensor support face, color, gesture, traffic-sign and QR-code recognition, plus obstacle detection. The speaker and microphone enable speech-to-text and text-to-speech, and SunFounder says the robot works with models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Qwen, Doubao and local Ollama through OpenClaw. You supply the AI service access.
What to know before you buy
The Raspberry Pi is extra, and the listing gives no battery, size, weight or age figures. The white version showed as unavailable, so the silver one is the one to buy. Orders ship from China with free shipping, and customs duty may apply.
Our buying advice
Buy the PiCrawler if you want a walking robot for $139.99 and already have a Raspberry Pi. SunFounder supplies no coupon code through our link, so we do not claim a saving; compare the total at checkout. If you want a more realistic dog form and a larger action list, compare the PiDog.
