The quick answer
For ages 4+, we recommend Makeblock mTiny for screen-free sequencing with cards and maps. For ages 6+, Codey Rocky arrives assembled and supports block coding and Python. Move to the mBot2 when the learner is ready to build and program a sensor-rich robot. For a compact car with a remote and Letscode, Arduino or MicroPython, consider Elecrow's CrowBot BOLT; choose it by project readiness because Elecrow does not publish an age recommendation. SunFounder PiDog and PiCrawler suit experienced makers who can supply a Raspberry Pi; Sillbird’s B886 is a build-first alternative for ages 8+.
Ages 4+: learn sequence through screen-free play
Makeblock recommends mTiny for ages 4 and up. A child arranges physical coding cards, taps the sequence with the pen and watches the panda move across themed maps. It is a strong first choice when the goal is to make instructions tangible and keep the activity away from a screen. An adult should be available to help with setup and play.
Ages 6+: start with a ready-to-use coding robot
Makeblock recommends Codey Rocky for ages 6+. It arrives assembled, so the learner can begin with its buttons, LED face, speaker and sensors before using mBlock. The same platform supports block-based coding and Python, giving a beginner a visible next step without changing robots. Choose it when the child is ready to use a compatible phone, tablet or computer alongside the robot.
Build and code when the learner wants a larger project
The mBot2 is a more involved build around CyberPi, with onboard sensors, movement and a path from blocks into Python. Makeblock also lists Arduino IDE C/C++ support through CyberPi. Elecrow's CrowBot BOLT is an alternative for a compact car project with an infrared remote and three coding environments; it needs four separate AAA batteries and has no manufacturer age recommendation. The mBot2's assembly and broader programming options make it a better fit when construction is part of the learning project, rather than a quick first activity. Check the exact package and software requirements before choosing.
Treat Raspberry Pi robots as maker projects
SunFounder’s PiDog and PiCrawler use a Raspberry Pi that is sold separately. They add Python, sensors and camera projects, with the PiDog in a dog-like form and the PiCrawler in a spider-like form. SunFounder does not publish an age recommendation for either kit, so we would choose by the learner’s confidence with computer setup and code rather than assign them an age band.
Pick a building kit when assembly is the main attraction
For an 8+ builder who is more excited to make and drive a robot than to start with code, Sillbird’s ecoEbot B886 lists 631 pieces, six alternative builds and app, remote and programming controls. It is a longer construction project. We would choose mTiny or Codey Rocky for the clearest first coding path, and the B886 when building is the reason the learner wants a robot.

Your questions, answered.
What is a good first coding robot for a 4-year-old?
Makeblock recommends mTiny for ages 4+ and uses screen-free coding cards, a tap pen and maps.
Is Codey Rocky suitable for a beginner?
Yes. Makeblock recommends it for ages 6+, and it arrives assembled with block coding and Python in mBlock.
Does SunFounder include the Raspberry Pi?
No. PiDog and PiCrawler require a compatible Raspberry Pi, which is sold separately.
Is Sillbird’s B886 a coding robot?
Sillbird lists programming controls, but the B886 is primarily a multi-build construction kit; choose it when assembly and driving are central to the project.
